Cabinets of Curiosity is an arts company specializing in site-specific performance installations and original theatre.
Site-specific?
Site specific work is inspired by and created for a unique and specific space – usually one that was not originally designed for theatrical or artistic use, but has in some way caught our imagination and is open to reinterpretation and rediscovery.
Many Cabinets of Curiosity shows are specifically created for the environment in which they are ultimately performed, be that an industrial building, an art gallery, historic house, museum or outdoor space. Our aim is to reimagine each particular environment in unexpected and absorbing way, in order to create an intriguing and often magical experience for the viewer.
Previous spaces re-interpreted by Cabinets of Curiosity include The Electrician’s Shop at Trinity Buoy Wharf (for Found), Trafalgar Square (Please Do Not Feed the Ladies) and The Old Truman Brewery (FIVE CLEVER COURTESANS)
Performance installation?
Performance installation is a new and emerging creative field, which blurs the line between art and theatre in a profoundly exciting way. As Sarah Blake, Artistic Director of Cabinets of Curiosity, explains: “This is a new way of creating that pushes the boundaries of existing categories in art and performance. It combines theatre with all aspects of art installation – including photography, digital media, figurative art, sculpture, architecture and landscape – to create a unique crossover concept.”
In fusing together multiple artistic disciplines, performance installation creates a new and exciting experience for the viewer, who is asked not merely to stand back as a passive onlooker, but engage directly both with the exhibits and performers in a dynamic and rewarding interaction.
